Prepare a MacBook for sale, return or handover
A laptop handover has two jobs: preserving the work you still need and removing your access and information from the machine you are leaving. Do them in that order. Begin while the Mac is still available and working, rather than treating reset as the final task before meeting a buyer or returning a loan.
Apple provides different preparation routes depending on the Mac and macOS version, including Erase All Content and Settings on supported systems. Follow the current manufacturer instructions for your exact device. If the Mac belongs to the university or an employer, use that organisation's return process and do not erase managed equipment without its direction.

Confirm who controls the device
Check whether you own the computer, borrowed it or received it under a managed scheme. Find the applicable return or transfer instructions. A personal Mac being sold and a university loan being returned can require different actions. Resolve that distinction before changing accounts, removing management settings or beginning a reset.
Record the model and relevant purchase or loan reference in your own files. Keep any information needed for support or the agreed handover, while avoiding unnecessary disclosure to a buyer. Confirm which accessories belong with the device. A missing charger or adapter is easier to resolve before the computer is packed.
Inventory the work you need
List current coursework, notes, reference libraries, projects, local downloads and any applications with data stored outside your usual documents folder. Check for material created on the desktop or in a temporary working location. Do not assume everything important is included merely because one cloud folder appears to be synchronised.
For restricted university or placement information, follow the organisation's storage and retention rules. A personal external drive is not automatically an approved destination. Ask the responsible team where that material should go. Separate your own work from data you are required to return or remove under an institutional process.
Verify the replacement copy
Open representative documents from the intended new location or replacement device. Check that project files have their necessary supporting material and that references or media are not missing. A successful copy operation is useful, but the real question is whether you can continue the work without the old Mac.
Let any approved cloud transfer finish and inspect its status. If you use a backup, understand the supported restore process and confirm that you have the access information it requires. Keep the old computer unchanged until unresolved gaps are fixed. Resetting first makes an incomplete transfer much harder to recover from.
Follow the correct Apple process
Use Apple's preparation guide to identify whether Erase All Content and Settings is available for the device. Follow that route where applicable, or the documented alternative when it is not. Do not mix instructions from different Mac generations or improvise commands from an unrelated forum post.
The process can affect accounts, settings and all locally stored content, so read each step before confirming it. Keep the Mac connected to suitable power and allow time for the documented procedure. If an unexpected lock, management message or error appears, stop and use the appropriate owner or manufacturer support route.
Check the handover state
After the approved preparation is complete, confirm that the computer is left in the state specified by Apple or the institution for its next user. Do not sign back into all your personal services merely to demonstrate that the machine works. Provide the agreed accessories and retain the evidence of sale or return that is appropriate to the transaction.
Keep your verified backup or transferred work according to your needs and university rules. Review account devices through the relevant providers if their instructions require it. A new laptop or storage purchase should be based on the replacement workflow you need, not on a promise that a quick reset can substitute for a careful handover.
